UCU strike: Making a complaint

The University's current position:

"As we will be unable to assess the impact on individual students until the industrial action is finished, we will make students aware of the procedure to follow to register a complaint related to the industrial action, as soon as the period has ended."

Having met with the University Executive team they have made the following clear:

  • There will be a specific system for students to make complaints about the strikes. This will be separate from the normal complaint procedure, which has a three tiered approach (level 1, 2 and 3).
  • The strike complaint system will be single tiered, meaning students will only have to launch their case in one place before an official outcome is decided upon. This will allow the complaint to be dealt with faster than the normal process.
  • If you are unhappy with the outcome of your case, once the complaints process is completed, you will be able to escalate the case directly to the OIA (Office for the Independent Adjudicator). You will have to go through this process before escalating it to the OIA.
  • The strike complaint system can only be used for students who have had issues which have come about due to the strikes.
  • The University have suggested that the strike complaints process will open in January, however, no date has been set yet. This is because the University want to see how ASOS (Action Short of a Strike) will affect students before deciding their approach to compensation. The Students' Union will keep students updated on the date.

What you will be able to complaint about:

  • If the strike has adversely affected you in anyway, in relation to your personal and University life, this is a reasonable complaint. This could include, but is not limited to, your education and your welfare.
  • If you would like, you can receive help from our Support and Advocacy department with your complaint. You can book an appointment here: https://supportandadvocacy.simplybook.it/v2/

What you can do in the meantime if you wish to make a complaint:

If you have any further questions regarding complaints, please feel free to get in touch with your officers (find their details here).
