Waves Cheerleading

Brighton and Sussex Waves are a competitive cheer squad who currently hold multiple National Championship titles in Cheer, Jazz and Pom. We are the BIGGEST and the BEST society to join whether you are from Sussex or Brighton University, or BSMS.

What is Competitive Cheerleading?

Don’t let the word ‘cheerleading’ fool you, although we started in 2006 as a game day squad we are now attending national and international competitions in Cheer Athletics which is a different side of the sport, and we say sport as Cheerleading has been officially named a sport in 2013! Every year the number of competitive cheerleading teams is growing, and competition is getting fiercer. Last year we had a record number of people at tryouts; over 200!

What do we do?

We compete in several national competitions which attract thousands of supporters to stadiums and arenas across the country, in 2015/16 we performed at Legacy 'Just Believe' and 'Dream Extreme' in London and Birmingham respectively, FC University Nationals in Birmingham, and the FC Internationals in Bournemouth. We prepare for those competitions by training weekly at Brighton Falmer gym, with fortnightly tumbling sessions at Horsham Gymnastics club to make use of the full sized sprung floor available. Although we have fun and enjoy the sport all of our members are dedicated and put in a lot of hard-work into practices for us to do well at competitions!

The reality of competitive cheerleading is very far off from American football fields or pom-poms. Competitive cheerleading consists of a gruelling choreographed routine that combines elements from various disciplines into a synchronized display of athletics, gymnastics, dance, flexibility, and raw power.

So Boys don’t let the name and uniform fool you, we need your Strength and Power to be a winning team!

Our society has few squads within our team:

Competitions squads:

Co-ed Level 3: Both Male and Female

All-girl Level 3: Just Female

Non-competetive squad:

We also have a non-competetive Game Day squad who cheer at the side of the Brighton Tsunami's American football games - so if competing isn't for you, you can still be a part of the Waves!

Why Join the Waves?

Because we train hard, but we also play hard!

We are like a big family: we have weekly socials, fundraising events/parties at any opportunity (Christmas, Thanksgiving etc) all with the Brighton Tsunami American Footballers which are always a blast!

And of course, the infamous summer TOUR, the details of which are better left to the imagination...

We also support local and national charities, last year we cheered on Marie Curie Cancer Carer runners and the Brighton Marathon.

However the charity closest to our hearts in the Angelus foundation,  for whom we organize and host an annual charity pink night at the biggest club in Brighton, so make sure to come and support us in November!

Can I join?

Competitive cheerleading can be demanding but is also very rewarding. Training and competing requires dedication, strength , commitment and team work and it is a sport for both men and women...

Therefore anyone and everyone is welcome to come and try out for the Waves!!

Leaf Awards

What is the Leaf Scheme?
