Musical Theatre (SMuTS)

Welcome to the Sussex Musical Theatre Society!

We're an active performing society within the union that regularly produces incredible shows featuring some of the best talent Sussex has to offer.

We started up over 25 years ago and have performed shows such as Fame, Guys and Dolls, RENT, Spring Awakening, Little Shop of Horrors, Sweeney Todd, Cabaret and West Side Story.

Come see our next show, Jekyll & Hyde performing in the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts. Dates are 21st-24th of March 2018, more info here.

We hold open auditions for our shows every year, with this year's 'Jekyll & Hyde' being performed in the newly built theatre on campus, the Attenborough Centre for Creative Arts. We also arrange Cabaret/Open Mic perfromances throughout the year which are open to anyone to help fundraise for our (very expensive...) shows, showcasing the incredible talent at Sussex and Brighton.

Our next two night Cabaret will be on the 1st and 2nd of March at 7:30pm in Room 76. If you want to perform, get in touch with our Social & Events Sec, Zoe Deuchar!

SocialWe also hold loads of socials to meet people from all over the University, through pub crawls, theatre trips, film screenings, quizes, and many other events, so have a look at our Socials & Events group to hear about what we're doing next.

All are more than welcome to join, whether you're a mature student, post-graduate, undergraduate, non-student, past-member, whatever!

There are so many opportunities for everyone to get involved outside of auditions too. All our shows have student producers, directors, musicians, choreographers, set designers, costume and make-up artists... If you're interested in being part of the shows, get in touch! And if you just want to hear about when we're holding our shows and events, like us on Facebook!

SMuTS practices a safe space and zero tolerance policy. This means that in meetings and rehearsals, our members can feel safe and supported, with no fear of discrimination. Zero tolerance means that if people breach this understanding, we will never stand for it. Our society has attracted people from all sexualities, cultures, and walks of life, and we will always be in full support of that. For more information, click here.

Leaf Awards

What is the Leaf Scheme?
Leaf awards reflect contributions of the society or sports club towards its members, the University of Sussex Students’ Union, the University of Sussex, the local community and the public. Leaves can be attained at bronze, silver or gold levels by meeting three, six or nine criteria. Leaves apply for an academic year as a symbol of what the present committee have achieved.

Groups can work towards nine leaves:

Below are the Leaves we have achieved so far this year:

Inclusivity Leaf

The Inclusivity Leaf is awarded to groups who have taken positive steps to increase the diversity of their membership and include as many members as possible. They have made specific efforts to include students that don’t traditionally engage, without ignoring or neglecting their current membership or other student groups.

Social Leaf

The Social leaf is awarded to groups who have taken active steps to include as many members as possible and regularly engage in various social activities, including those organised by - and with - other societies/sports clubs.

Community Leaf

The Community leaf is awarded to groups taking practical action in the service of others to create positive change. This can be through involvement with activities and events on campus, but they will also have made an impact on the wider community by engaging with activities, campaigns and events at a local, national or international level.

Team Sussex Leaf

The Team Sussex leaf is awarded to groups who have made efforts to encourage collaboration and mutual support between Students’ Union groups. Groups who achieve this award have worked in collaboration with other clubs and societies to support a welcoming, inclusive and friendly team environment within clubs & societies at Sussex.

Development Leaf

The Development leaf is awarded to groups who have taken active steps to develop themselves, offer development opportunities to their members, build on the successes and failures of previous years and/or worked to maintain the high standards of previous years.

Fundraising Leaf

The Fundraising Leaf is awarded to groups who dedicate their time to organising a variety of different fundraisers. Groups who have achieved this leaf will have raised money for their own group or another group at Sussex to help fund themselves to expand and develop, as well as for local, national & international.

Events Leaf

The Events leaf is awarded to groups who have demonstrated an exceptional ability to organise and hold events on a regular basis. Such groups have also made the effort to hold joint events with other societies/sports clubs and/or the Students’ Union and the University. They have also gotten involved in cultural and community events.

Communications Leaf

The Communications Leaf is awarded to groups who communicate with their members and the student body regularly and in innovate ways.
