Musical Theatre Society (SMuTS)

Welcome to the Sussex Musical Theatre Society!

SMuTS is a musical theatre-focused community which endeavours to encourage, support, and showcase its members.

Founded in 1991, SMuTS have since performed fantastic shows including Fame, Guys and Dolls, RENT, Spring Awakening, Little Shop of Horrors, Sweeney Todd, Cabaret, West Side Story, and Jekyll & Hyde (pictured above).

...and this year, we are incredibly excited to announce that our 2019 musical will be Legally Blonde: The Musical!

We believe it’s our collective responsibility to ensure that SMuTS is as inclusive and welcoming as possible, so we would like to emphasise that anyone and everyone is welcome to audition for the show - you don’t have to be blonde!

Open auditions will be held the week after Freshers Fair, so come along to the Fair on Wednesday 19th September to meet us

There are so many opportunities for you to get involved outside of auditions too. Our shows have student producers, directors, musicians, choreographers, technical crew, set designers, costume and make-up artists... so if you’re interested in taking part, get in touch!

On Saturday 22nd September we're hosting an introductory workshop in which we'll be learning a song from the musical Hairspray! Our day session includes a dance workshop, singing workshop, and a workshop for our instrumentalists out there - there’s something for everyone! By the end of the day, we will all come together and showcase what we’ve learned.

RESERVE YOUR TICKETS HERE: https://www.sussexstudent.com/whats-on/smuts-musical-theatre-workshop-hairspray-1909/

The price for this event is £2, however it's only £1 if you sign up to our SMuTS mailing list on the door. Reserving a ticket on the SU website is free, so please do remember to bring your £2 or £1 on the day! All our proceeds for this event will go to our chosen charity, ‘RISE’. This Brighton based charity works and supports victims of domestic abuse.

Limited spaces available so book your place soon!

CABARETS

We arrange Cabaret/Open Mic performances throughout the year to help fundraise for our (very expensive...) shows, and they are open to anyone who wants to showcase their talents!

The date of our first Cabaret of the year is soon to be announced, so stay tuned!

SOCIALS

We also hold loads of socials to meet people from all over the University and hang out with each other, such as parties, pub crawls, theatre trips, film screenings, quizzes, and much more. Anyone and everyone is more than welcome to join, whether you're a mature student, post-graduate, undergraduate, non-student, past-member, whatever!

Most of our members go away saying that joining this society is the best decision they made at Sussex, which is due to the wonderful people they meet and experiences they gain while part of it. We hope you’ll take their advice and join us!

Want to help support SMuTS? Follow us on Twitter and Instagram, like us on Facebook and subscribe to our YouTube channel. And of course, don't forget come along to our shows!

SMuTS practices a safe space and zero tolerance policy. This means that in meetings and rehearsals, our members can feel safe and supported, with no fear of discrimination. Zero tolerance means that if people breach this understanding, we will not stand for it. It is the collective responsibility of all to uphold good conduct and challenge others’ unacceptable conduct. Leaf Awards

What is the Leaf Scheme?
Leaf awards reflect contributions of the society or sports club towards its members, the University of Sussex Students’ Union, the University of Sussex, the local community and the public. Leaves can be attained at bronze, silver or gold levels by meeting three, six or nine criteria. Leaves apply for an academic year as a symbol of what the present committee have achieved.

Groups can work towards nine leaves:
