Nigerian Society

Who we are and what we do

With a steady growing number of international students studying here at the University of Sussex, Nigerian students make up one of the highest communities of international students in Sussex. Hence, the Sussex Nigerian Society provides an important platform to support the Nigerian student: by creating a sense of belonging to all Nigerian students and ensuring seamless integration into the University and Sussex community life. We often organise 'Jolly Hour': where Nigerian students, as well as friends and affiliates of the society, get together to unwind.

Education being the most important goal of our time at Sussex, the Sussex Nigerian Society encourages academic excellence and the acquisition of the right skill set essential for the sustainable growth and development of Nigeria, Africa and the World at large. By this, the Sussex Nigerian Society hopes to foster a well-rounded global citizen.

Also, the Sussex Nigerian Society serves as a window into the rich multicultural heritage, traditions and values of our great nation - Nigeria. We achieve this by organising regular events - for instance, Cultural Awareness Event during the Sussex One World Week - where we showcase our diverse cultures and traditions. This serves as a constant reminder of our Nigerian roots at the same time, provide an opportunity for non-Nigerians to participate and appreciate our multifaceted heritage.

Where we meet

Periodically, we hold meetings and host events at The Meeting House on campus. We have our Facebook group which our members, old and new, are encouraged to join. We have also created a 'Whatsapp group' for all Nigerian students at Sussex to provide real-time information about our society's events and activities.
