History Society

Welcome to the Sussex History Society!

We are an academic society for anyone and everyone sharing an interest in history - be it studying history at Sussex or history enthusiasts beyond their degree subject. Becoming a member of the Sussex History Society will not only enhance your academic experience of Sussex, but also offer you a unique social experience with other like-minded history lovers.

Sussex History Society caters for both the academic and social needs of our members with a wide range of events. We have academic events such as talks from guest and faculty members on historic topics, film screenings of movies interpreting and presenting history, trips abroad to places with interesting history and trips within the UK to museums and historic sites. On the social side, we hold events such as themed nights out, bar crawls, historically themed quizzes, alcohol-free socials such as the Brighton ghost-walk, fundraising events for charities and formal events such as balls.

Also, we are connected with the University of Sussex Undergraduate History Journal. This is a platform for students to showcase their work and enhance their editing skills. A link can be found to the latest edition on the right hand side. To become involved please don't hesitaate to contact us and we can connect you to the right people.

We have no fees for our members – that’s right folks membership is free to the Sussex History Society!

Leaf Awards

What is the Leaf Scheme?
Leaf awards reflect contributions of the society or sports club towards its members, the University of Sussex Students’ Union, the University of Sussex, the local community and the public. Leaves can be attained at bronze, silver or gold levels by meeting three, six or nine criteria. Leaves apply for an academic year as a symbol of what the present committee have achieved.

Groups can work towards nine leaves:

Below are the Leaves we have achieved so far this year:

Inclusivity Leaf

The Inclusivity Leaf is awarded to groups who have taken positive steps to increase the diversity of their membership and include as many members as possible. They have made specific efforts to include students that don’t traditionally engage, without ignoring or neglecting their current membership or other student groups.

Social Leaf

The Social leaf is awarded to groups who have taken active steps to include as many members as possible and regularly engage in various social activities, including those organised by - and with - other societies/sports clubs.

Fundraising Leaf

The Fundraising Leaf is awarded to groups who dedicate their time to organising a variety of different fundraisers. Groups who have achieved this leaf will have raised money for their own group or another group at Sussex to help fund themselves to expand and develop, as well as for local, national & international.

Events Leaf

The Events leaf is awarded to groups who have demonstrated an exceptional ability to organise and hold events on a regular basis. Such groups have also made the effort to hold joint events with other societies/sports clubs and/or the Students’ Union and the University. They have also gotten involved in cultural and community events.

History society have been awarded the silver development leaf award by the Students’ Union in recognition of their efforts to develop themselves as a society, build on the successes and failures of previous years and offer new exciting opportunities for Sussex students.

History society have been awarded the bronze academic leaf award by the Students’ Union in recognition of their efforts to promote extra-curricular academic activity to their members.

History society have been awarded the bronze social leaf award by the Students' Union in recognition of the fun and engaging social activities they put on for their members.
