Riding bikes, repairing bikes and renting bikes!

Who we are and what we do!

Above all else, we are cyclists and we love to ride!

We do short, easy, social rides to the beach, Lewes, Devils Dyke and other amazing local places, longer, approx. 50-60mile rides to take in more of the incredible Sussex landscape fully, and are planning longer trips to France and beyond!

We've got weekly Sunday rides for both mountain bikers and road cyclists of varying distances, usually to favoured coffee shops for a date with a cake.

Often we end up along the sea front heading past the i360, for fish and chips, or to the marina! Then back into town or campus for a pint!.

Road Cycling

Road rides go every Sunday from the workshop on campus and will soon be finishing at N+1 cycle cafe who are sponsoring us with extended opening hours and 20% off servicing! Rides take in all of the countryside from Sussex, to Surrey and beyond! Socials are weekly rides on Sundays, as well as rides on Saturdays, Wednesday afternoons and also tagging along with N+1 cycle club and Brighton Uni on a Wednesday evening!

For rules about road cycling please observe the following, for missing group rides on a Sunday due to weather, see rule #5 (HTFU) : http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/

Sussex Mountain biking

Born from the passion of Richard and Will after seeing the scope around Brighton for Mountain biking, their side of the society is growing at an exponential rate and with the introduction of the active US MTB taster sessions we're hoping for a great season out and around. Not limited to Stanmer and Wild park, they've ventured into the Surrey hills, over to friston and are laying groundwork for trips to bike parks around the country for the ultimate MTB experience!

Volunteers work on fixing other bikes in our two sheds on campus, formerly freewheelers and re:Cycle, between 12 and 4 on Weekdays, we've got a full training course so you don't have to worry about not knowing, this whole part of the society revolves around sharing knowledge!

Buying and Renting Bikes

Taking off from where RE:Cycle left of a number of years ago, the Bike Shack was born! A student led workshop and rental scheme managed by Ed, Josh, Horatio, Richard we restore reclaimed bikes, rent new ones and sell parts and accessories too! With around £8000 in funding from the Sussex Fund, we've now got a fleet of bikes for rental to students! The more we rent, the more we can restore, the more people we get on bikes. We're supported by our volunteers in our two on campus workshops based in Falmer house, and in a shed behind Swanborough near Bramber house.

Rental Prices Spring 2018:

Rentals are currently suspended due to volunteer number requirements. Running a rental fleet is immensely time consuming, but we hope to have bike ready to roll ready for spring term!

Premium - £9/week (£6.50/week for volunteers) +£100 deposit

As of September 2018 all premium bikes will be fitted with dynamo lighting.

Refurbished - £5/week (£3.50/week for volunteers) +£100 deposit

With access to trade accounts with Madison, Sportline and The Cycle Division, with more in the works we can cater to pretty much everything! Bikes are available to buy from us, volunteers and regular members of the soceity get discount on these items. We'll soon have a shop open here so you can see what we'll be selling!

For bikes we have access to brands such as Adventure, Ridgeback, Genesis, Ridley and Saracen! For parts we have everything from Shimano and Sunrace, to Garmin and Park Tools! For purchasing parts, a new bikes or serviving find us in the workshops between Midday and 4pm on weekdays.

The maximum rental period is 12 weeks so bikes can come in for regular servicing and if you rent more than once you can try all different types of bikes!

Regular volunteers get parts at trade price (+vat) for the work they do, we are essentially a fully functioning shop and repair workshop.

BUCS - British University and College Sport

At present we don't have a race team, we've got a few guys that race for the uni and external teams but we'd like to build our own. Join us for rides, help us organise, develop and thrive as a society and as a sports team! Put in the hours and we'll support you pursuing your racing ambitions! The road race season will start in January with competitions locally at preston park velodrome, a public facility we're incredibly fortunate to have access to. If you're interested in competing we have mechanical and financial support on hand.
