Cycle Soc - The University of Sussex Cycling Club
Who we are and what we do!
Join us if you like to ride your bike hard, fast, chilled, for pleasure, for fitness, for fun, for friends,
to push yourself, to push others, for the sights and sounds of the countryside - for the love of cycling!
We do short, easy, social rides to the beach, Lewes, Devils Dyke and other amazing local places, longer, approx. 50-60mile rides to take in more of the incredible Sussex landscape fully, and are planning longer trips to France and beyond!
We've got weekly Sunday rides for both mountain bikers and road cyclists of varying distances, usually to favoured coffee shops for a date with a cake.
Often we end up along the sea front heading past the i360, for fish and chips, or to the marina! Then back into town or campus for a pint!
As well as the cycling society we operate freewheelers and re:Cycle, so by joining up you'll have access to learning all there is to know about your bikes, volunteering with freewheelers and re:Cycle is a great opportinity to understand not only the mechanics of bikes, but the running of a small business and interacting with trade suppliers and sponsors.
But where are the mountain bikes?
This is Will. He's a second year product design student and our resident mountain bike expert. He'll be taking regular mountain bike rides, volunteering in freewheelers and re:Cycle and can often be found playing with the suspension set up on his bike. For those of you familiar to mountain biking, that's a 12 speed SRAM system there, and it's warranted. Will's there for all MTB enquiries and helping you improve your skills on the trails.
BUCS - British University and College Sport
At present we don't have a race team, we've got a few guys that race for the uni and external teams but we'd like to build our own. Join us for rides, help us organise, develop and thrive as a society and as a sports team! Put in the hours and we'll support you pursuing your racing ambitions! The road race season will start in January with competitions locally at preston park velodrome, a public facility we're incredibly fortunate to have access to.
While we don't do triathlon as such we're geared up to support triathletes develop their skills on the bike, our social secretary is a GB triathlete himself so please do come along if you want to try triathlon!
We are hoping to ultimately have access to more than one trade account to give cyclists here at the uni the opportunity to get great deals on equipement, clothing and nutrition for their rides! Forming a local cycling (and not forgetting our friends in the triathlon world) shop run by students for students, to support the local cycling club! We currently use the cycle division (http://www.thecycledivision.com/) to stock re:Cycle and freewheelers but can source you things externally. Tektro, sunrace and schwalbe are just some of the brands we can get in at the moment.
We have the equipment in freewheelers and re:Cycle to build bikes straight out of the box, if you've bought a new bike online and got it delivered, bring it down to the shed and we'll get you rolling smooth in no time!
Generally organised in town, we've done pub crawls, social nights. Harry Pink is the man to talk social, and as our social sec he'll be organising various socials thoughout the year, both on the bike and off the bike!
