Sussex Chess Society

The University of Sussex Chess Club (USCC) is the chess centre of the University which aims to provide a fun and exciting experience as members explore the secrets contained over the chess board.

All abilities are welcome, so whether you are a hardcore chess fanatic or are new to the game, and just want to have a light-hearted push of the pieces, this is the place to be.

Our aim is:

• to promote a fun environment for chess players at Sussex that allows players of all skill levels to flourish (whilst most importantly having fun!)
• to create a friendly sociable atmosphere with a variety of events and occasions, most notably are the trips to Falmer bar
• to participate in chess tournaments with other clubs and universities in both local and national competitions; thereby creating a platform for those wishing to improve.

We meet on Monday evenings in Meeting Room 2 and on Thursday evenings in Meeting Room 4, starting at 6pm through until late.

Check us out on facebook for regular updates.

Our committee is composed of:

  • President: Louis Wigley
  • Vice President: Ollie Willson
  • Treasurer: Magi Clave Llavall

who will be happy to help regarding any queries so don't hesitate to get in contact.

The Mid Sussex league:

This is the local league within the county of Sussex where many different clubs compete throughout the year for the title of county champion.

Sussex have participated for several years in this league, where we even became champions of Division 4 in 2016/2017. This year we have again entered a team into the Mid Sussex Chess league, where we will again compete against other local teams. The tournament gives our strongest players the opportunity to play other top players in the County as well as giving our newer players the chance to play competitively.

If you would like to find out more about them then you can check out the league's website here: http://www.midsussexchess.org.uk/

Chessoc have been awarded the bronze social, development and inclusivity leaf award by the Students' Union in recognition of the fun, inclusive and engaging social activities we put on over the year for both members and non-members (2017).
