Chamber Choir Society

Welcome to the University of Sussex Chamber Choir!

We are a group of choir lovers from the Sussex and Brighton University communities who meet on a weekly basis, predominantly singing classical works. We've recently done pieces by Philip Stopford, Gerald Finzi, Edward Elgar, Franz Schubert and W.A. Mozart. We sing for the official university Christmas Carol Service on campus and put on a concert at the end of the Spring term. Otherwise we can be found doing things like going busking in town and going on socials,  as well as carol singing in Brighton station and Churchill Square. We get involved with university and Union events when we can, such as turning on of the Christmas tree lights in Library Square, singing for the open Day and hosting a joint concert with the Concert Band to celebrate One World Week. In Spring 2016 we were lucky enough to perform Gabriel Faure's Requiem with John Rutter! October 2016 saw us singing in the Meeting House's 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Rehearsals are every Monday, 6.15pm-7.45pm in the Meeting House - everyone is welcome. Students, staff, alumni, members of the public, we want you! For those interested in joining, we recommend you should have a good knowledge of reading music, and are comfortable with singing loudly in front of others!  New members  are accepted for the first few weeks of each term, so you can either join from the start of the academic year or in the Spring Term.  If you'd like any more information or to message us directly, head over to our Facebook page - we keep this regularly updated with any news related to rehearsals and concerts and social events!  Alternatively, send us an email (see the links on the right hand side).

If you'd like to sing with us, Membership costs just £10 per term or £20 for the whole year. Becoming a member entitles you to come and sing with us at every rehearsal - that's less £1 per rehearsal! The first few sessions are free so that you can get a feel of who we are and what we do before you decide to commit.

Events - what we get up to outside of rehearsals!

Christmas Carol Singing Fundraiser, December 2017

Last year, we collaborated with Sussex RAG (Raising and Giving), who braved the cold of Brighton station with us to join in with
carols and hold money buckets. We are really pleased to announce that in the few hours we were there, we raised just over £120!

We practice the Student Union's safe space and zero tolerance policy

The University of Sussex Chamber Choir practices a safe space and zero tolerance policy. Our rehearsals, socials, meetings and performances are discrimination free zones where our members can expect to feel safe and supported. As with the rest of the committee, our lovely Welfare and Inclusivity Rep, James Ritchie, can be contacted during rehearsals, or via the choir's email address and on Facebook if you wish to talk. Our society has always welcomed everyone with a passion for singing, irregardless of who they are and where they are from, and always will. For more information, click here.

Members with accessibility requirements can access our rehearsals by using the step-free door into the Meeting House (located on the side opposite the steps), and the lift which will take you up into the chapel. Let us know if you need any help!

Leaf Awards

What is the Leaf Scheme?
Leaf awards reflect contributions of the society or sports club towards its members, the University of Sussex Students’ Union, the University of Sussex, the local community and the public. Leaves can be attained at bronze, silver or gold levels by meeting three, six or nine criteria. Leaves apply for an academic year as a symbol of what the present committee have achieved.

Groups can work towards nine leaves:

Below are the Leaves that have been achieved by previous committees:

Inclusivity Leaf

The Inclusivity Leaf is awarded to groups who have taken positive steps to increase the diversity of their membership and include as many members as possible. They have made specific efforts to include students that don’t traditionally engage, without ignoring or neglecting their current membership or other student groups.

Social Leaf

The Social leaf is awarded to groups who have taken active steps to include as many members as possible and regularly engage in various social activities, including those organised by - and with - other societies/sports clubs.

Fundraising Leaf

The Fundraising Leaf is awarded to groups who dedicate their time to organising a variety of different fundraisers. Groups who have achieved this leaf will have raised money for their own group or another group at Sussex to help fund themselves to expand and develop, as well as for local, national & international.

Events Leaf

The Events leaf is awarded to groups who have demonstrated an exceptional ability to organise and hold events on a regular basis. Such groups have also made the effort to hold joint events with other societies/sports clubs and/or the Students’ Union and the University. They have also gotten involved in cultural and community events.

Communications Leaf

The Communications Leaf is awarded to groups who communicate with their members and the student body regularly and in innovate ways.
