Big Band

Auditions are closed for the band of 2018-2019! If you are interested in joining for next year please find our facebook page and follow us so that you can get updates for auditions at the begining of next year.

The Sussex Universities Big Band is an events band comprised of musicians from the Brighton and Sussex Universities. Based at Sussex University in Brighton the band plays at a wide range of events each year from university balls to weddings and private parties. We are available for hire to play at any event and provide extremely competitive rates for a professional full scale big band.

If you are interested in hiring the Sussex Universities Big Band please email sussexbigband@gmail.com

The band provides an opportunity for musicians from both Brighton and Sussex Universities interested in Jazz to be part of a Big Band. Auditions are held at the start of every year for Jazz Singers, Saxophones, Trumpets, Trombones and Rhythm Section. A huge range of opportunities are available within the band as all players must re-audition every year. The band plays a large number of gigs every year as well as organising a tour in the summer. We play at gigs at venues around the University and in bars and clubs in Brighton where everyone is welcome, both students and members of the public.

The Sussex Universities Big Band has a wide and varied library of music, ranging from Jazz Standards (Take the A-Train, Moonlight Serenade) to Funk (The Chicken, New Rochelle) and Jazz arrangements of Pop and Rock tunes (forget you, take on me, crazy in love, lady marmalade) to male and female Vocal numbers (Straighten Up and Fly Right, Luck be a Lady, Is This Any Way to Fall in Love?). The band's repertoire is constantly being updated with all new additions being suggested by members of the band before being purchased. The band has a tight, interchangeable set-list that can be modified for any occasion, be it a wedding reception or black-tie ball.

The committee for this acadmic year in comprised of President Thomas Keene, who organises gigs and manages the day-to-day operations of the band, Vice President and Secretary Breezy Haywood, who takes care of all the administrative work, Treasuerer Guy Hawkins, who manages all fincial matters, Social Secretary Fiona Boyle, who organises social events and creates a friendly and inclusive atmosphere, and equipment secretary Joe Marshall, who manages all of the band's equipment and technological issues. Outside the committee we have two dedicated welfare offices, Rahual Panchal and Evie Bond.

Sussex Universities Big Band practices a safe space, zero tolerance policy. Our rehearsals, socials and performances are discrimination free zones. Our members can expect to be treated equally and fairly during society activities and feel safe and supported by our Welfare Officer or any other committee member.  Members with accessibility requirements can access our rehearsals using the lift available in Falmer House.
