We believe such a politically engaged and active Students’ Union requires a forum for students to debate beliefs on a numerous array of diverse topics. This will allow members to engage with the prevailing issues of the day, as well as arguments that have persistently challenged society.

Members who join our society will develop critical thinking, the ability to explore conflicting ideas and an improved oratorical ability which will be useful in any area of life. This society will also aid in honing personal confidence through public speaking.

Debate society should always be a pensive and safe environment to discuss contentious issues, for any passionate free thinker and contrarian. This ultimately will lead to the formation of a dialogue within a community of socially and politically minded individuals.

We organise weekly British parliamentary style debates: anyone can turn up and debate an unseen topic with 15 minutes prep time. Additionally we will be organising regular public debates on pre-prepared topics, both for Sussex students to speak and inviting external speakers; as well as training sessions for those new to competetive debating. We will also be aiming to send a team to debating competitions in the Spring term. These will be accompanied by regular socials to mark the events. High on our priorities will be to attract noteworthy guest speakers from all sides of the political spectrum to contribute to debates.
