The Caribbean Students’ Unite (CSU) was formed with the key objective to highlight our unique Caribbean identity, shaped by our languages, religions, festivals, art forms, values, customs, sports and other forms of self-expression. The CSU’s mandate embodies a mission to bring awareness to, and advocate for the various topical issues of Caribbean students and the Caribbean community. The CSU also seeks to generate and foster a sense of unity and community by providing a forum for students, educators, and members of the community who share a common interest in the Caribbean to share and learn about the diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of the Caribbean through various social, cultural and educational opportunities and activities.
Membership is open to any member of the University community, regardless of race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, national or ethnic origin, political beliefs, or disability, who falls into any of the following categories:
1. Citizen of the Caribbean
2. Person of Caribbean heritage
3. Persons with genuine interest in the affairs and peoples of the Caribbean
Description of Committee Roles and Memebers 2017-2018
Our President, Michel ’Lee Williams, is the spokesperson for CSU. As our President, Michel ‘Lee ensures that the management committee functions properly, that there is full participation at meetings, all relevant matters are discussed and that effective decisions are made and carried out.
Our Vice President, Scharlee Thompson plays a key role in supporting the President. Scharlee takes on the leading role in the absence of the President, and chairs meetings ensuring that CSU is running smoothly. She also Laisses with other societies to establish and develop strong ties.
Our Secretary, Rochelle Harding, is responsible for the documentation and communication of the activities of the committee. Rochelle is the primary administration officer of the committee and provides the links between the committee, members and outside agencies.
Our Treasurer, Ishmeala Rigby, is responsible for overseeing the CSU’s financial affairs, ensuring its viability and ensuring that proper financial records and procedures are maintained.
Our Arts Coordinator, Shannon Fernander oversees the CSU’s arts - related events. Shannon is responsible for identifying and managing opportunities to promote the arts through CSU’s core activities.
Emmanuel Henriquez, our Marketing Executive, is responsible for creating promotional material for events, and works at increasing ways that to successfully promote the CSU through social media and campus newspapers. Emmanuel also liaises with the Marketing and Publicity department at the USSU (University of Sussex Student Union).
