Drag Society (DragSoc)

Welcome to the University of Sussex Drag Society!

We are a group of people enthusiastic about the art of drag performance - exploring and blurring gender boundaries, improving live performance skills and appreciating the vast drag culture here in Brighton and across the rest of the world. With monthly events showcasing the best student drag around, we have made history being the UK's first student drag society!

We aim to provide a diverse space for anyone exploring the complexities of this thing society has called gender. We have monthly performances ranging from lipsync performers and dancers to live musicians and stand up comedy. Many of our performers provide theatrical commentaries on society and the world around us. These presentations can be political, emotional, comical or just a bit weird!

Our society is not only for those who have done drag before; it is for anyone who is interested in drag both as a performer and as a viewer. It is for this reason we provide open mic slots for anyone who wishes join us in having some fun running around a stage. This year the society will be working harder than ever before to work with other performance based organisations, both based within and outside of the university. You will see many of our performers at famous drag shows such as Kingdom, Kings of Colour, Queerdom, Fat Cabaret, Queer Prom, The Powder Room, and many more. We feel that finding your community means everything for those joining university, and to show our appreciation and love for our own community this year our monthly showcases will be raising money for local LGBTQ+ charities.

If you want to make a start in the drag world, continue an existing drag journey, or just come and enjoy some glittery gender bending fun, then DragSoc is the place for you!

We host:

  • Live performances
  • Screenings
  • Classes/Tutorials
  • Bar crawls/club nights

and much more!
