Effective Altruists

We will be meeting every Tuesday @6 o'clock in Fulton 201!

We are Sussex Effective Altruists and our objective is the application of data and scientific reasoning to the sometimes sentimental world of ‘doing good’! Through debates, discussions and talks we want to learn how to think critically about the effectiveness of charities and types of actions that are aimed at helping sentient beings (animals and humans).
If you are into interesting debates and love to learn about how to effectively make the world a better place, this is the ideal place to start.

Many of us want to help people and make the world a better place! But the world outside is pretty chaotic and seemingly swarmed with a lot of problems. So where do you start? Who needs help the most and most important of all, what can you realistically achieve? This is what we'll find out here!

http://www.effectivealtruism.org/ - A great introductory website.

http://80000hours.org/ - An organisation that evaluates the impact of career paths.

http://www.givewell.org/ - A charity evaluator that measures impact rather than overhead.

http://effective-altruism.com/ - A load of resources and discussion from effective altruists on effective altruism (a bit like an EA reddit).

https://www.givingwhatwecan.org/ - An organisation that promotes effective response to extreme poverty, including charity evaluation and pledging away income.

http://globalprioritiesproject.org/ - A group that tries to answer the question of comparing impacts that seem incomparable, e.g. giving to prevent climate change or prevent malnutrition.

Or just do a Google search on 'effective altruism' and see what you find!

There are also facebook groups you may be interested in:

Our news

New year resolution

Thinking of a New Year's resolution?
How about making the world a better place, through donating some money to effective charities? By pledging 10% of your future income you can save a child's life every year and offer 100s of childrens a better education!
--> If given to the Against Malaria foundation, this could distribute more than 600 malaria nets and prevent around 160 cases of malaria, equivalent to saving a child’s life.
