Student-Led Supervisor Awards - Nominations Now Open

Are you a Sussex research student and feel that your supervisor has gone above and beyond their call of duty? In collaboration with the Doctoral School, the Students’ Union is running a Student-Led Supervisor Awards, to celebrate excellent supervision at Sussex!

Nominations for the awards are open from now until 1st June. Both individuals and groups of research students can put forward nominations – a perfect chance to commend supervisors for their help and guidance at any stage of the PhD. The criteria for nominations cover any number of things, including the following:

  • Supervisor demonstrates enthusiasm for the role, is flexible in regard to supervision sessions, and is prepared to go the extra mile to help navigate students through difficulties, be they academic or otherwise
  • Challenges students while encouraging them to contribute something substantial to their specific area of academic discourse
  • provides additional support and facilities to give greater scope to the PhD, or to enable it to be completed early
  • Is exceptionally supportive through the planning for assessments and the PhD viva
  • Offers constructive employment and career advice post-graduation
  • ·Has been exceptionally supportive or encouraging and raised the student’s attainment by helping them through a difficult time.

Rose, Postgraduate Education Officer, has this to say about the awards and PhD supervision at Sussex:

It's really exciting that research students are getting the opportunity to say thank you to their supervisor in this way. Supervisors can have such an important impact on a student's experience here and often support researchers through some very difficult times. The introduction of this award is part of a wider piece of work that I'm doing on improving PhD supervision at Sussex; I think it's really important to celebrate when the supervisor-supervisee relationship has gone well.

To nominate your supervisor, please fill out this form before 1st June. Please do not hesitate to contact Rose, on pgeducation@sussexstudent.com, if you require more information about the awards.

Winners of the Student Led Supervisor Awards will be sent a congratulatory email and invitation to the Sussex Research and Impact Awards.
