Free Shop sort - thank you!

Crate of donated food

We would like to give a big thank you to all the people who moved out of halls of residence and donated some of their leftover belongings to the Free Shop. The Free Shop is a reuse scheme done in partnership with the Students' Union and Sussex Estates and Facilities (SEF), to save stuff first years no longer need from going to landfill.

We ended up with;

  • Over 100 crates of clothes, kitchen and homeware and bits and bobs for Freshers to rummage through in our September Freshers' Free Shop
  • 14 crates of food for The Real Junk Food Project Brighton, who turn food that otherwise would have gone to waste into pay as you feel meals
  • 14 crates of food for Fareshare Sussex, who redistribute waste food from supermarkets to those in need
  • 2 large boxes of unopened toiletries donated by Space with US and a couple of crates of large, clean towels due to be dropped to Brighton Women's Centre

We also had some very full looking collection boxes for The British Heart Foundation, so thank you to everyone who donated.

A further big thank you to our Free Shop Assistants, who spent three days cleaning and sorting all the items, and to the porters at SEF for their work in organising the collections and moving some very heavy crates around!

Our Freshers' Free Shop will be open in the Debating Chamber on September 15th, 16th and 17th.

New Strategy for Student Housing

Fri 02 Jun 2017

Sarah, Society and Citizenship Officer, has recently attended two meetings with the Task and Finish group, set up by the Strategic Housing Partnership, to develop a new student housing strategy that will be ready for early 2018. The Strategic Housing Partnership is a Brighton-based partnership organisation that deals with housing and the last time this kind of group was set up was in 2009 and so there will hopefully be lots of new changes and updates.
