Plans agreed for new Students' Union building

The Students’ Union and University have agreed to develop plans to build a new Students’ Union building on campus.

The new building will have enhanced facilities and is part of the University’s long-term plans to improve teaching, residential and social spaces on campus.

Over the coming months, the Students’ Union will be working with the University to develop design and location plans for the building so that these can be submitted as a part of a planning application to Brighton & Hove City Council.

During this time, there will be consultation with students about what they would like to see included in the plans.

The President of the Students’ Union, Abraham Baldry, said:

Ensuring that the university facilities grew alongside the student body was a key manifesto promise I made last year, and I’m delighted that we’ve reached this agreement. Falmer House was built when there were 800 students at Sussex and in my view is no longer fit for purpose. This represents a fantastic step forwards for the students at Sussex, and will include much more bookable space for student societies, a larger bar, as well as late-night food.

The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Professor Michael Farthing, said:

The Students’ Union plays an important role in helping our students and we’ve had some very constructive discussions to reach this point. We’re extremely pleased that we’ve now got a plan in place which will result in a new Students’ Union building and which I very much hope will become the heart of the University. The new, enhanced facilities should help to make the student experience at Sussex even better than it currently is and a great space for all at the University to enjoy.
