After over four years of trading, the Students’ Union will be saying farewell to the Globe with the last day of trading on the 17th of March.
The much loved and quirky venue is being sold by its current owners and as such our time there as tenants has to come to an end.
We have enjoyed being at the Globe over the years and are happy that we were able to make a success of this hidden gem of a pub. Working with the Laine Pub Company has been a real positive experience for us and we’ve certainly learnt a lot from this partnership.
The Globe has hosted hundreds of student events from chess and wine evenings to Drag Bingo and some of the best student deals in town! For many it was a home away from home, lacking all pretensions, but with a no-nonsense attitude - proximity to West Street and generally being the last pub standing at 3am on a Friday/Saturday night does teach you a thing or two!
We’ll miss this eclectic venue, full of character and known for its fun vibe and friendly staff. What we won’t miss so much are the dodgy and inaccessible toilets, the musky smell or being on the windiest street in Brighton!
However, what makes a venue is the staff that work there and the customers it attracts. The Globe has always been a venue where students from Brighton, Sussex and BIMM happily mixed with locals all looking for something a little bit different which is what you always got with the Globe.
We have met with our staff at the Globe and informed them of what’s going on. We have discussed options for them going forward, and have already ensured that there are positions available in our campus outlets for all Globe staff should they wish to stay with the Union. We will ensure close consultation with all staff affected by the Laine Pub Company’s decision to sell, and are hoping to have an open dialogue with the new owners of the Globe regarding their intentions to ensure affected staff are as well informed as possible.
Measures are also being put in place to move the small number of affected student events already booked in, either on campus or to other town-based venues.
While we are sorry to say goodbye, we are focussing our energy on ensuring we develop social spaces on campus- the hub of student life at Sussex. We have exciting plans for the year ahead with works already in the pipeline to improve our provision at Falmer Bar, increase our capacity and move to seven days a week trading with a healthy late license!, launching a new venue in Northfield and plans to improve and expand the service at the Clubhouse in time for the new academic year.
Finally, just a massive thank you to all the staff that have worked at and loved the Globe and a massive thank you to all our customers who made the experience worthwhile.
Our last trading week will be that of the 12th of March with a series of events to say goodbye in style. All welcome!
