What's it like being a Student Rep?

Hi everyone.

My name is Afreen Begum and I am the Student Rep for Postgraduate Law 2018- 2019.

Fun fact: I was 15 days late in coming to the UK, so I ran for Student Rep from India. And to my surprise, I won. It’s the best decision I have made so far, considering how many opportunities I’ve got because of it.

It is my first time abroad and I didn’t know anyone before arriving here - but I knew I had a chance to write my own narrative. I can be who I want to be here, and that’s the beauty of it. There is so much to do and there are so many opportunities to be grabbed while you’re here.

Being a Student Rep is an opportunity that has opened up a new and different world to me. I have met some amazing people in the Students’ Union: People who are so young, yet so determined and inspiring.

The support system is beyond what I ever expected. The culture of supporting and uplifting each other is something that should exist everywhere yet is rare to find, and I am lucky to have found that in our Students’ Union.

I’d been here just four months when people encouraged me to run for a Full-time Officer role. Even though I didn’t win, I will never forget the experience I gained and the fact that so many people believed in me. Being a Rep made that possible for me.

Student Rep is not just a title - it’s a responsibility that we sign up for when we decide to run. As a Student Rep, I have listened to my fellow classmates continuously and still continue to do so, so that everyone can have a better university experience.

I have worked together with my course convener to have a special workshop for international students; given feedback in meetings to make sure there is consistency, and so on. There is still a lot to do, but I feel a little better knowing that I have been able to make a little difference at the University.

We also have an amazing Student Rep Assistant, Ellie, who is always there with a smile to greet you and to help solve your problem no matter what. Plus, we got a pretty rad hoodie and a tote bag along with our awesome socials. I would definitely encourage you to run to be a Student Rep. It is an experience you will never forget.

Take care,

Afreen Begum.
