Mass climate lobby on 26 June

A climate change mass parliamentary lobby is scheduled for June 26th.

"The Time is Now" mass lobby has been organised by The Climate Coalition and Greener UK, two coalitions of organisations that represent millions across the UK. The lobby's aims are to "send a message to politicians - it's time to end the UK's contibution to climate change and pass ambitious laws that create a healthier environment for nature and people".

On June 26th, thousands will join the mass lobby to meet with MPs outside Parliament and demand stronger protective legislation for the environment. The government is currently shaping the first new Environment Bill in more than twenty years, and will set out a legal framework to improve the environment over the next 25 years. This is a change from previous legislation, which has focused on damaged limitation only; the proposed Bill seeks to take more proactive action in environmental restoration. Although proposed to ensure we have environmental legislation post-Brexit, it is likely the Bill will proceed even if we remain within the EU. As with the Climate Change Act, the Bill will need a committee that can take the Government to court if it does not meet its own targets.

One of the purposes of the mass lobby is to ask MPs to support the Bill, as well as take action on climate change more generally.

See here for a guide to the lobby.

NUS support

The NUS is offering micro grants to students to help support activity related to the mass lobby day and transport on the day, as well as activities to raise awareness about the new Bill. The deadline is June 15th. See here for more information, or email sustainability@nus.org.uk.

If you're unable to attend on the day, you can show your support by emailing your MP, visiting one of their constituency surgeries or organising a group for a regional meeting.
