Sussex students | A letter from your SU President, Filip

Your full-time Offcer team outside the Meeting House Your full-time Officer team outside the Meeting House

Hey Sussex!

Just wanted to reach out and give you a quick update on what’s been happening in the SU and the University. I wanted to start this off by saying that despite the Students’ Union offices being shut as of this week, the staff is hard at work - only in a different setting. We have moved to working from home and have taken direction to socially distance. We came to this decision to be socially responsible, because even though most of us are in low risk categories, it is our duty to think about those in the high risk groups.

But your officer team is still here! If you have any questions relating to Covid-19 situation, please fill out this survey.

If you need to get in touch with me or any of the other officers for any other reason you can find our contact details here: https://www.sussexstudent.com/about-us/officers/.

The environment that we are currently in is so fast paced and ever changing that sometimes we might not have all the answers for you. But we are working on them! The officer team has daily meetings with members of the University Leadership Team and we’re asking them all the questions you might have and then feeding them back here.

If we don’t have an answer for you just yet, that means that University doesn’t either. But we are working really hard to lobby them on several different points as well working together to find solutions to concerns raised by you. So please continue to fill out the survey so we know where to direct our attention and so that both we and the University is aware of issues and concerns.

We kept bars and shops open for as long as we could. Based on advice issued by Government, we are now opening only The Coop at Bramber House every day from 7am to 8pm while we wait for the situation to change.

Moreover, our Events team is working really hard at the minute to think of some fun activities we can do while remaining socially responsible, so keep an eye on our website for those to follow.

For updates from the University, please keep checking Student Hub for updates (and your Sussex email): https://student.sussex.ac.uk/coronavirus.

And finally, I wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you. One thing that this crisis has shown is how kind and resilient Sussex students are. Over the past week I have seen students organise within their own communities and reach out to people to help. Our students have been offering help to their neighbours in various different ways, from tutoring kids, running out to get groceries to offering to walk dogs. All of this is making me proud to be a member of the Sussex community and thank you for that. In case you need to some help while in self-isolation, please don’t hesitate to reach out. One of the great ways is this Facebook Group set up by Sussex students: https://www.facebook.com/groups/551946102105745/ .

Please stay safe and don’t take any unnecessary risks. Make sure you take care of yourself and others and to stay in touch with your loved ones.

Lots of Love,

Filip Vasilijevic
President of the University of Sussex Students’ Union
