As part of the Student Rep Leaf Scheme, which rewards Reps for their contribution, Talia has written about her experiences of being a Foundation Year Student Rep:
'Becoming a Student Rep was for me a slightly impulsive decision. I came in to the role without a full understanding of what it meant to be a Rep, without a full understanding of what being a University of Sussex student meant. However as being a Student Rep has taught me, there is no one way to fill any of these roles. As a Student Rep I have had the privilege of engaging with hundreds of students across the foundation year programme; I have been able to effect change in my course and I have been able to make my voice and the voices of Foundation Year students heard.
With the strikes in full swing at the time of writing this article, one of the difficulties facing Foundation Year students is the way in which these strikes impact our course. In my capacity of Student Rep I have been able to make Foundation Year voices heard throughout the university. Being a Rep has made me more engaged with the University, with my lecturers, with my education and most importantly with my peers. Yes it is a lot of hard work but the snazzy hoodie and seeing the visible impact on students makes it all worth it.'
