On the 19th of March 2016, two hundred people grouped together to play in a mixed gender charity football tournament fighting against homophobia in sport.

Football Vs Homophobia 2016 raised over £560 for the charity Stonewall, who campaign for the equality of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people across Britain. The event saw teams full of colour and glitter battle it out on the pitch in order to try and claim the FvH 2016 trophy. The third annual fundraiser saw the inclusion of a ‘fun’ and ‘competitive’ league to help aid the game flow of the day, which was brought in after feedback from the 2015 event.

2016 also saw an extensive selection of raffle prizes, including items such as an afternoon tea for two at The Grand Hotel, a three month gold gym membership at Sussex sports, combo meals at Nandos, LaserZone vouchers, tickets to Komedia, a one year membership at The Gym Group Brighton, plus many more. Music was played across the pitches all day, with families and external members to The University of Sussex also in attendance, helping to create a fun and loving atmosphere for all those taking part.

The University of Sussex Women’s Football Club spent many months preparing for their fundraiser, and couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome. Extensive organisation and planning meant that the day was problem free and highly successful. Such an event helped to raise awareness across campus of the work that Stonewall do, and with no exaggeration has made a massive difference to all of those who take part in football.

USWFC look forward to hosting their next Football Vs Homophobia tournament, and cannot express their thanks to all of those who helped create such a great event for everyone. Football Vs Homophobia 2016 has helped bring people together to fight homophobia, support equality within the game, raise awareness of the issues faced by players, and shown how sport is nothing less than inclusive.
