The Women's Football Club hold Football vs Homophobia every year to raise money for local charity, Stonewall. Stonewall works hard to fight homophobia within sport and support LGBTQ+ individuals within the local community, a cause which our club has always been happy to advocate.
The day, 1st April, involved two mixed gender football tournaments for both fun and competitive entrants, but also a delicious bake sale and huge raffle with prizes donated from Donatello restaurant, Ministry of Sound, the Coop, Brighton Racecourse and dozens more! This year we also included a glitter station to make the day even more fabulous, opened the bar in the ClubHouse and had SussexFood on site.
With perfect weather, fancy dress and a Revenge-themed playlist blasting, the atmosphere for the day was electric. Not only did we have 30 teams enter this year, but also endless spectators coming to get a taste of the excitment. It is safe to say that everyone involved had a great day and we were pleased to see not only Sussex students attending but also local football clubs and non-student teams, expanding the event into the local community.
The total raised was £872.18 - our most successful event to date! With the growing popularity of the event, we hope to raise even more money for Stonewall next year! We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that entered, supported and donated on the day, and look forward to seeing you again next year!
