The Students' Union has launched its new postgraduate campaign #CapsOff in response to make proposed loans of up to £10,000 available only to postgraduate students under 30.
Whilst these loans are a major step towards a fairer system of student finance for taught postgraduates, it is likely that they will only be available to students under the age of 30.
This policy clearly discriminates against those over the age of 30 and goes against Union policy that education should be open to all.
Rose, Postgraduate Education Officer, said:
I believe everyone should have equal access to education regardless of age and that this policy will severely affect certain groups of students such as parents or carers.
Many students have already expressed their concerns about the cap preventing them from studying further. Tracy, a mature student who intended on studying her masters here at Sussex said:
I feel the government does not recognise the value of mature students within academia and indeed the valuable contribution that mature persons make in the community. Being older does not equate to being able to fund yourself through university, I am as poor as every other student!
