Blue Monday & the elephant in the room

Last week the Time to Change campaign put on a lot of events to help raise awareness of mental health issues and to encourage students at Sussex to have conversations about their mental health.

Blue Monday

The week started with Monday the 26th of January, known to some as Blue Monday, with a range of activities to try and help get rid of the January blues.

Blue Monday featured massages, henna, free fruit, smoothies, arts & crafts and free consensual hugs in Falmer House Reception, as well as meditation, yoga, tai chi and qi gong.

Time to Change volunteers were on hand to give advice about mental health and support services available at the University.

Students were given labels and pens to write positive messages which were attached to the free fruit.

Elephant in the room

The Time to Change campaign also raised awareness of student mental health issues by using an elephant costume.

The Time to Change elephant visited lecture theatres and patiently waited until lectures had finished. At the end of each lecture it attended the lecturer played a video about mental health at the University of Sussex.

The aim of sending the elephant into lectures was to get people talking about mental health issues, and it worked:

Students' Union Welfare Officer, Rianna Gargiulo, commented on the week:

I am really happy with the results of both Blue Monday and our elephant in the room campaign. The response from people, in person and on social media, has been overwhelming. The purpose of all of this was to raise awareness of mental health issues amongst students and to help remove the stigma surrounding mental health.

Today is Time to Talk Day; Time to Change are asking the nation to have a 5 minute conversation about mental health.

You can find out more about our Time to Change campaign and sign up to the mailing list on the campaign page.

Don't let mental health be the elephant in the room.
