Update from Associate Tutor Forum 02/12/2014

Pro Vice Chancellor, Clare Mackie, joined the last Associate Tutor (AT) Forum to explain the new contracts that will soon be offered to ATs.

The contracts will be optional, with ATs able to stick with their current contracts if they wish. Clare Mackie explained that the new contracts will include the following features:

  • None of the contracts will be zero hours contracts
  • Teaching will not be a requirement of ATs on the new contracts
  • PhD students who do choose to teach will be given proper training
  • The ATs will now be referred to as Doctoral Teaching Assistants, this was not well received by the Forum and they will lobby to be called Doctoral Tutors
  • The contracts will be written to ensure that all PhD students have the best contract possible

Clare Mackie is still waiting for a full job description to be released by the Human Resources department of the University; this description was requested of the department in June 2014.

Clare also talked about the possibility of back payments for ATs, further details of which should be available in the future.

The Forum and Education Officer, Bethan Hunt, would like to thank Clare Mackie for her presence at the Forum and are hopeful that this dialogue will be maintained over the course of the process.
