Candidate for the position of NUS Womens' Conference delegate - open place

together we can, together we will

Who am I??

Hi, my name is Afreen Begum and I am running to be your NUS Women's Conference Delegate. I am 24 years old. I am from Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), India. I have completed my B.A.LL.B last year and I am pursuing my LL.M in Criminology and Criminal Justice right now. I am very active in the University, be it Union, campaigns or societies. I am very vocal about my opinion be it political or otherwise. I love taking part in debates and group discussions. I have been an United Nation volunteer as an Advocate towards Gender Equality.

Why me??

After coming to Brighton on 1st October 2019, I have been extremely active. I ran for student representative from India and i won and that was just the beginning. I am also the Student Union Councillor for PG Social Sciences. I am also the Democracy and Constitution committee member, as well as IT committee member. I am also part of the decolonise sussex society on behalf of which I also facilitated a workshop for Role Models project very recently. I am also pushing for having halal and kosher food available on campus, so that sussex can be more inclusive. I am also an active supporter of the Living wage campaign. I am also a buddy scheme volunteer which is an amazing place to meet new people. I am also part of various other societies like the Feminist society, politics society, law society, harry potter society, Islamic society etc which enables me to interact with different types of people in different circumstances. And I believe I can represent student voice as I have done so far.

Life before Sussex.

As a student coming from middle class conservative Indian family i have got this oppurtunity of a lifetime to come and study in Sussex which few years back I could only dream of. And i am determined to use all my experiences that i have gained over the years to make this year the best one. I believe I am perfect for this role because I have been an core member of the Student's Union in my previous college throughout my 5 year course and I know the nitty gritty of the functioning of a Student's Union. I as a part of the Student's Union have organised various events like International Moot Court, National level inter college cultural fest, State level debates, fashion shows and so on. I am also a member of Rotaract Club of Central Calcutta and a member of Lions Club International, Rabindra Sarobar, both of which enabled me and taught me to work in a team, take charge or manage a situation and a get a good read of people.

What will I do??

1) Student Voice

Sussex boasts a student strength of more than 13,000 students. And it gets difficult to be heard among such a big crowd. My objective is to hear as many people as possible and give them a collective voice. I want everyone to be able to get what they believe they should be getting in this University and I will make sure that their voice is heard.

I want to include everyone into the decision making process. Everyone should be able to voice their Opinion and express their grievances. After all democracy is by the people, for the people, to the people. I will hold various meetings throughout to know what people expect from the delegates and what needs to be changed  and what the real issues are, be it safe space, better mental health care, better living wage policy for students etc.
