Volunteering

Volunteering is an enjoyable way for you to make a difference, provides a fantastic opportunity for you to develop key skills for your future career and to check out possible career paths. On top of that it’s a great way to make new friends, to do something different from your studies and to get a different perspective of life.

We offer you the opportunity to volunteer in a wide variety of locally based organisations and community projects as well as for the Students' Union.

There are lots of options to choose from and we will help you find the volunteering placement that is right for you so contact us for more information.

Best practice support

Project V is very keen on providing some guidance on how to support volunteers to registered organisations.

VOLUNTEERING ENGLAND, the national development agency (commited to supporting, enabling and celebreating volunteering in all its diversity) has some very good resources on how to support volunteers. The Action Plan can be used in the initial meeting with the volunteers to look at how they can develop transferrable skills and set targets and action. The Self Reflection Plan looks at the whole learning experience. Again this is a very useful tool to get volunteers thinking about their progress.

Volunteering England also have a Good Practice Bank. The Good Practice Bank has core themes which deal with general good practice on managing volunteers and Specialist Themes that focus on more specific topics.

The local VOLUNTEER CENTRE also has a guide to assist organisations who involve volunteers and volunteer managers to implement good practice in their work. Also, check out the Brighton and Hove Citywide Volunteering Strategy 2010-2015: Joining the Dots.
