Volunteering

Volunteering is an enjoyable way for you to make a difference, provides a fantastic opportunity for you to develop key skills for your future career and to check out possible career paths. On top of that it’s a great way to make new friends, to do something different from your studies and to get a different perspective of life.

We offer you the opportunity to volunteer in a wide variety of locally based organisations and community projects as well as for the Students' Union.

There are lots of options to choose from and we will help you find the volunteering placement that is right for you so contact us for more information.

Information for students

Project V stall Students' Union Volunteering is the name of the Students' Union community volunteering scheme (part funded by Sussex Plus). We can help you choose a volunteering opportunity in the Brighton & Hove area as well as within the Students' Union. Our staff provide ongoing support throughout your volunteering time.

If you have any questions, concerns or problems - or you just want to let us know how much you enjoy your volunteering - let us know!

All organisations registered with Community Volunteering will pay for your travel expenses – so you won’t be out of pocket for your volunteering.

You will automatically become a member of Community Volunteering, as soon as you choose your volunteering placement. However, in the meantime, to receive regular updates, with news of upcoming projects and volunteering opportunities, e-mail volunteering@sussexstudent.com with your University of Sussex e-mail address to request that you are added to our mailing list.

International Students

You need a 'Tier 4 Student Visa' in order to be able to volunteer in the UK. Unfortunately, if you are visiting Britain on a 'Student Visitor Visa' only, you will not be able to undertake any volunteering activity.

If you're not sure which visa you have, please contact the University of Sussex International Student Support Office for advice - 01273 678422 or e-mail immigration@sussex.ac.uk

How to get started

You can have a look through our list of opportunities to help you start thinking about the sort of volunteering you'd like to do. You can also find out more about volunteering for the Students' Union.

Once you've had a look, the next step is to view our appointment availability with a member of the Community Volunteering team. Whether you've made your mind up or don't know where to start, we will give you all the help you need to choose and arrange the right volunteering placement.

We have an information area with more details about the organisations we work with and a computer you can use to browse our website. The Project V team will be on hand to answer any questions you may have and help you to find the perfect opportunity.

What happens next?

When you have started your volunteering, we strongly encourage you to get in touch with Sussex Plus. Sussex Plus offers you to create a webfolio (online CV) where you can showcase your skills and achievements. You can scan in certificates and links to web pages, include photos and details of projects you've completed. Take part in Sussex Plus to bring together your academic achievements, work experience and personal life.

We also have information about volunteer development and support online.

We also celebrate the achievements of our volunteers at our annual awards night.
