Societies

Societies are groups of students with a shared interest. We have around 150 societies and if there’s something missing, it’s easy to start your own.

Different societies do different things and run in different ways. Some are focused on one big project per year, others have regular meetings, some organise activities that anyone can come to, others focus on organising things for their members, some societies are quite small, others are huge.

All societies are open to anyone and you can join societies throughout the year so take a look at what is on offer. Make sure you keep an eye on the list of societies as new ones start up quite regularly.

Can I still join a society if I missed the Freshers Fair?

Probably. Most societies love to get new members at any time during the year. There may be a few societies that can only accommodate limited numbers but the best thing to do is contact the society you're interested in directly by looking them up in our A-Z list.

What do I need to start a society?

To start a society you just need three people and an idea. The three (or more) people will be your committee that runs the society and your idea for the society will set out what you'll do. Don't worry if you're starting small, most societies grow and expand over time. We can help you set up your society and get it going. Find out more about starting a society.

How do I join a society?

The first step to joining a society is to get in touch with them either via email or by popping along to one of their meetings. Contact details and more information about each society are available in our A-Z list of societies. Find out more about joining a society.

How can I get funding for my society?

If you'd like some funding from the Students' Union it is easy to apply. You'll need to explain what the money is for, how much you need and how it will benefit your society. Your application will be considered by the Activities Committee. Find out more about funding available for societies.

Where/when do societies meet?

Times and venues vary between societies. Most societies meet during the evening but some meet during the day and at weekends. Some societies list their meeting times and venues on their websites which you can find in our A-Z list of societies

For others you'll have to contact them via their websites to ask about their meetings. Alternatively you can try searching for the group on Facebook as many societies have groups or pages and promote their activities and meetings in this way.
