Netball Women (1st & 2nd)

► Netball Club Information

So, what is it all about?

Those selected for the squad will be expected to attend training twice a week and play in BUCS matches on Wednesdays. While it is a commitment, it’s such great fun and we all have a really good time, both in training and matches. The Firsts are currently in league 3A of the Kukri BUCS Netball South Eastern Conference, and the seconds are in 5A, you can follow the league fixtures and results on the official BUCS website.

For those who aren’t selected for the squad or who would prefer to join in for a bit of fun, our Thursday evening training, 8-9pm in Sports Centre Hall 1, is open to everyone. This is a great chance to meet new people and enjoy playing some netball. It really doesn’t matter if you haven’t played since school, think you’re useless or if you’ve never even played before – everyone’s welcome and encouraged to join us!

Speaking of which, our socials deserve a mention! Again, these are open to everyone – both squad and club members – and they are a definite highlight of the week. Following the BUCS games on a Wednesday, there’s time for a quick turnaround before heading out on the town. Starting with a few drinks (and usually a few drinking games) at Falmer bar, you get a chance to chat to everyone before heading on to Oceana, where we meet up with all the other sports teams and dance the night away. Coordinated by our lovely social secs these often involve fancy dress (previous themes have included Disney, bumblebees, chimney sweep, and pub golf) and are a great way to get to know people.

Some of the highlights of the netball year include Varsity (a day in Summer term when each Sussex sports team takes on their Brighton equivalent), the Sports Awards Ball (a firm favourite and a good excuse to get dressed up) and, of course, our infamous annual sports tour. Last year, hundreds of Sussex sports team members headed for Salou, Spain, where we played a bit of sport, sunbathed and drank a lot of alcohol. This, like Thursday training, is an experience open to everyone (not just squad members). We have two social secs who have already planned joint socials with other teams such as Rugby men, and more chilled out socials at Donatellos restaurant, the sports union sponsor where we can use our sports card for discount! We are looking into a day out for Sussex netball at a local Superleague match or international game as a wicked day out and to watch some top class netball. We will be organising events throughout the year to fundraise and are looking at hosting a termly tournament for local secondary schools at Sussex.
