The Students' Union is committed to protecting the environment and is involved a variety of projects and activities to raise awareness about environmental issues and support sustainable initiatives.

For the last to years we have been awarded a Gold ‘Green Impact’ NUS award for our efforts to reduce our ecological impact.

We have an elected part-time Environmental & Ethical Officer, supported by the full time Operations Officer. The role of the Ethical & Environmental Officer is to liase between students, societies, the Union and the University on all things ethical and environmental, and to push forward new policies and ideas for sustainability. We also have four Ethical & Environmental Reps

The Big Lemon is on its way back

21st September 2012 4:20 pm

The Big Lemon is heading back to town but arriving in slightly different style as this year students are launching the Big Lemon Bus Co-op.

Students purchasing a membership will have an equal say and share in their transport and how it is run. Non students are still welcome as members and passengers though the elected positions will be open to students only.

The Big Lemon is a local bus company which only uses buses that run entirely on recycled cooking oil! This creates a minimal impact on the environment each time you travel on the Big Lemon Bus.

The student co-operative aims to give students easy access to an environmentally friendly, ethically sound and effective alternative form of transport for students to travel with; all of which operates under a co-operative run by student opinion.

The student co-operative will set up a transparent and democratic decision-making body, which will then contract out the Big Lemon to run a route from campus to the Old Steine in Brighton via Lewes Road (the 42 route previously run by the Big Lemon).

If any profits are made then the members of the co-operative will decide where they go; to charity, invested back into the Big Lemon or distributed as a dividend to all members of the co-operative.

The Big Lemon Bus Co-op will also be group that organises socials, charity and community events and other amazing lemony activities.

To get this service running we need as many members to sign up as possible so we can start in January 2013 for 6 months and hopefully for many full academic years after that.

There are two types of membership available;

  • FULL membership - £140 which gives unlimited travel from 6 months
  • LITE membership - £70 which gives you half price travel for just £70

>> Pledge your membership to the Big Lemon online

Pledge your membership now and if, sadly, the scheme doesn't attract enough members you'll be refunded. Sign up now to ensure the route comes back to campus!

Pledge your membership now to get your future transport and membership to this awesome project and to have some big hunky lemony goodness in your life!
