Environment

The Students' Union is committed to protecting the environment and is involved a variety of projects and activities to raise awareness about environmental issues and support sustainable initiatives.

For the last to years we have been awarded a Gold ‘Green Impact’ NUS award for our efforts to reduce our ecological impact.

We have an elected part-time Environmental & Ethical Officer, supported by the full time Operations Officer. The role of the Ethical & Environmental Officer is to liase between students, societies, the Union and the University on all things ethical and environmental, and to push forward new policies and ideas for sustainability. We also have four Ethical & Environmental Reps

Sussex Switch-off - Cut Carbon - Win Prizes. Win a massive party for your halls

Take part in the Students’ Union’s new ‘Sussex Switch-Off’ inter-halls energy-saving competition to help cut the carbon footprint of your halls, and win prizes!

Making sure we reduce carbon emissions obviously has massive benefits for all of us in helping tackle climate change, and following our 5 easy energy-saving tips is a great place to start. Just imagine how much we could cut our carbon footprint if every single student in halls was following them! Even if you're not living in halls you can still follow our tips.

What’s in it for me?

At the end of the year the students in the halls with making the biggest savings in energy will win a big celebratory party! There are also on-going competitions and challenges throughout the year which you can enter to win prizes for yourself.

There’ll be events, parties, film screenings and socials throughout the year, so it’s a great way of meeting new people too.

And (if that’s not enough good reasons to get involved!) the energy-saving habits you’ll pick up by taking part will help you save money on your energy bills once you move out into the wider world!

Follow these 5 easy energy-saving tips

  • Switch off your phone charger when it's not charging
  • Switch off your computer when you're not using it
  • Put a lid on your pan when you're cooking
  • Switch off the lights when there's no-one in the room
  • Only boil as much water as you need when you use the kettle
