The Students' Union is committed to protecting the environment and is involved a variety of projects and activities to raise awareness about environmental issues and support sustainable initiatives.

For the last to years we have been awarded a Gold ‘Green Impact’ NUS award for our efforts to reduce our ecological impact.

We have an elected part-time Environmental & Ethical Officer, supported by the full time Operations Officer. The role of the Ethical & Environmental Officer is to liase between students, societies, the Union and the University on all things ethical and environmental, and to push forward new policies and ideas for sustainability. We also have four Ethical & Environmental Reps

Sustainable Living

Saving energy can be as simple as changing daily habits such as leaving computers and lights on, and and switching to renewable energy which can now be as cost-effective as the alternatives...

HOW?

Here are a few easy places to start:

  • Join the Sussex Switch-off - win prizes in this energy-saving competition!
  • Turn off lights and appliances when you're not using them (and don't leave them on standby)
  • Saving water saves energy too - Taking a showing can use three times less water than a bath
  • A third of all household water is flushed down the toilet! Put a 'hippo' save-a-flush in your toilet cistern to save a litre with every flush
  • Switch to Renewables - if living off-campus, try switching to a renewable energy provider

Sussex Switch-Off is an energy-saving competition between halls of residences.

‘Hippos’/Save-a-flushes
Saving one litre of water for every flush, get in touch with your water company and ask them to send you a free hippo/save-a-flush to put in your toilet cistern.
