Best Bar None

Best Bar None is a national award scheme supported by the Home Office and aimed at promoting responsble management and operation of alcohol licensed premises. The aim of Best Bar None is to reduce alcohol related crime and disorder by building a positive relationship between the licensed trade, police and local authorities.

It reduces the harmful effects of binge drinking as well as improves the knowledge and skills of enforcement and regulation agencies, licensees and bar staff to help them responsibly manage licensed premises.

The process of becoming recognised by Best Bar None includes meeting minimum standards and culminates with a high profile award night with category winners and an overall winner.

Green Impact

Formerly known as the 'Sound Impact' award, this is an accreditation scheme for environmental best-practice in students’ unions.

Students' Union Evaluation Initiative

Working towards SUEI logoWorking in partnership with the NUS and supported by the Department of Innovation, Universities and Skills and the Scottish Government, the Students’ Union Evaluation Initiative (SUEI) has been developed to make a positive difference to the lives of students at University, by improving the outcomes from their Students’ Unions.

It is a unique quality assessment model that assists in improving the services and activities delivered to members of Students’ Unions by indicating areas for continuous improvement. The initiative has already helped lots of Unions to achieve better results through its framework.

We achieved a bronze SUEI award in 2011, you can take a look at the information we submitted as part of our assessment.

Investing in Volunteers

Investing in Volunteers logo The Students' Union has been awarded the Investing in Volunteers mark to recognise its work with volunteers. Investing in Volunteers is the UK quality standard recognizing good practice in organisations' volunteer management.

The Students' Union supports over 700 volunteers in a variety of roles, including sport and society committee members, part-time elected officers, councillors, reps and volunteers within Union Computers, Front of House, Events Team, Welcome Team and Advice & Representation Centre.

To achieve this quality standard, the Students' Union streamlined the recruitment, retention, training and support for all volunteers involved.

Fairtrade status

Fairtrade logoThe University of Sussex was awarded Fairtrade status in 2007 after collaboration involving University of Sussex staff and the Students' Union (USSU) to promote ethical values throughout the University campus. The University stocks 100-plus Fairtrade products.

To become a Fairtrade University, Sussex had to submit an application to the Fairtrade Foundation, demonstrating it had met the following five requirements:

  • The Students' Union and the University authorities both create a Fairtrade policy
  • Fairtrade foods made available for sale in all campus shops and used in all cafés/restaurants/bars on campus
  • Fairtrade foods (for example, coffee and tea) are served at all meetings hosted by the University and the Union, and are served in all University and Union management offices
  • There is a commitment to campaign for increased Fairtrade consumption on campus
  • A Fairtrade Steering Group is set up
