Advice

The Advice & Representation Centre  can give you free, independent and confidential information, advice and support on a range of academic and non-academic issues.

We have professional advisers and elected student representatives and the service is completely confidential, independent from the University and no issue is too big or too small for us to deal with.

The Students' Union is here to help you make the most of your time at Sussex so if there's something bugging you that you think is likely to be affecting other students as well tell us about it by filling in our online form

Security

Campus security are available 24 hours a day in York House Reception. As well as responding to emergencies they provide an escort service. If you require an escort across campus from one residence to another, or from the railway station, it is best that you book in advance but you can ring them when required 01273 678234.

Lighting

Report broken lighting and broken internal phones to your Porter during office hours, they will fill in a form and it should be dealt with within 7 days.

Attack alarms

Personal attack alarms are available from the Union Shop, Falmer House. These can help you feel more confident and scare off an aggressor.

Safety tips

  • When on your own at night walk against the traffic, this makes it harder for curb crawlers.
  • Also walk near the curb; you are more visible to other pedestrians and drivers.
  • Try not to walk alone when it is dark, even on campus: if you have no option then stay in well lit places, avoid isolated short cuts.
  • Plan your route and tell someone where you are going.
  • If you look confident it could deter an attacker.
  • Always carry a personal attack alarm in your pocket.
  • Always be aware, trust your intuition: cross the road to avoid anyone you are unsure about.
  • If you are followed go into a populated place e.g. an open shop or pub and ask for help.
  • Never hitchhike alone and try to avoid sitting alone on public transport.
  • Also find out about bus and train times to avoid waiting around.
  • Use door and window locks provided even if going out for a short time.
  • Always use the residences intercom system to check a visitor is welcome before you let them in.
  • Self-defence classes are often available in Brighton and/or on campus. Contact the Students' Union's Womens' Officer - women@ussu.sussex.ac.uk for further information.
