Always by your side
I am a Union Councillor (2011-2012), second year part-time Technology & Innovation Management Master student, and part-time Portfolio Analyst at American Express.
As a Student Trustee, I would leverage my strategic planning, portfolio and financial management skills in contributing to building better strategic planning and governance for the Union and ensure quality services are being delivered to our Union members.
As a Union Councillor, I could contribute my Union Councillor experience to work with fellow Union Councillors and Officers to provide operational and policy-making suggestions to the Union and liaise with student reps.
Please vote Keith as your FIRST choice!!!

Because we're in it together!
As a postgraduate international student, I’m familiar with the questions and challenges of university life. If elected to be a taught postgraduate councillor, I hope use my university experience and relationships with students to represent postgraduate needs and concerns on campus and make postgraduate study at Sussex a more memorable and positive experience.

Tell me that I can't do it. Tell me that I should not even try. Tell me the risk is too high, the challenge too much, or the feat too tough. Tell me that I won't do it, …but I will.

What do Union Councillors do?
The Union Councillor's role is similar to part-time officers, but instead of being responsible for a specific portfolio, Union Councillors are responsible for representing the interests of students in their school of study.
Union Council has representatives from each of the 13 Schools that make up the majority of the voting members of Union Council. Anyone can attend and debate the issues at hand, but only elected Councillors are allowed to vote. Union Council meets around twice a term.
Being elected as Union Councillor means you will be representing the views & interests of students within your School of study, and making sure that these views are reflected in the activities of the Union. You will be the main point of contact between the student reps and the Union, as well as being responsible for holding the full-time and part-time officers to account.
Becoming a Union Councillor for your school is a great way of getting involved with decision making in the Union, and has the broadest remit of any elected position.
Union Councillors are a link between the Union and the Student Reps scheme. A key responsibility for Union Councillors is to make time to listen to student opinion and meet regularly with School Student Reps in their school. This is to make sure they are aware of and can represent issues and concerns affecting students' academic experience as well as feeding back what goes on in the Union.
One undergraduate Union Councillor is elected for each of the current academic schools and a postgraduate taught and a postgraduate research representative from each cluster is elected.
Role description
Time commitment: 2-3 meetings of approximately two hours per term plus time spent finding out the views of students you represent
All elected student Officers of the Union shall:
-
Promote and uphold Union Policy as passed by General Meetings, Union Council, or Referenda
-
Uphold the substance and spirit of the Constitution
-
Take an active role in the relevant decision making and development of the Union
-
Attend all meetings and training sessions relevant to the post
-
Undertake such tasks consistent with Union procedures and policy as allocated by Council, relevant committee or sub-committee, or as instructed by a General Meeting.
-
Promote the positive involvement of students in all areas of the Union’s activities
-
Actively work to become personally aware of issues and areas of concern within the student body, and use this knowledge to inform action and lobbying to improve conditions for students through the Union’s democratic structures.
-
Actively work with other elected Officers to inform the student body about the Union’s work.
Elected student Officers who are representatives of a School, or any other distinct group within the student body [i.e. Councillors] shall;
-
Actively work to become personally aware of issues and areas of concern within the group of students whom they represent
-
Actively work to ensure that the views and needs of that group of students are expressed and considered within the Union’s democratic structures, with a view to their being appropriately reflected throughout the activities of the Union, and within the University and wider community.
-
Actively work to communicate Union decisions and campaigns back to members of the group of students that they represent.
-
Actively liaise with all Union Clubs, Groups, and Societies directly relevant to their remit, in order to effectively carry out their responsibilities as outlined above
