► Union Councillors

Union Councillors are elected to represent the views & interests of students within each School of study, and make sure that these views are reflected in the activities of the Union. They also form the main point of contact between the democratic structures of the Students' Union & academic Student Reps, and thereby help to ensure that academic issues enjoy a high profile at Union Council.
One undergraduate Union Councillor is elected in the summer term for each of the current academic schools and postgraduate taught and postgraduate research Councillors are elected in the autumn term. You can find out about elections at www.sussexstudent.com/elections
Any student is entitled to come and observe the Council meetings but only Council members have voting rights - becoming a Union Councillor for your school is a great way of getting involved with decision making in the Union, and making sure the views of students in your School of study are heard!
Email addresses for each Councillor are given below...

As a student rep in 2010/11, I have had quite a few experiences in representing students and I want to take it further. I want to help and contribute as much as I can to the positive development of the department and possibly the university and the understanding between people. I have moved a lot and changed schools quite often. This has led me to realise, from a very young age, that people from different culture could be very dissimilar. However, one striking resemblance was the fact that most people will tend to complain and not do anything about problems arising. I want to be part of those who will try to change things. These are time when students need to be represented by an open-minded opinionated person who can be strong enough to stand up for or against changes. I want to defend the student’s voices to make everyone’s university experience an unforgettable one.

Lucy Freedman
Year 3
Email: englishcouncillor@ussu.sussex.ac.uk
Since I came to Sussex , the university, and department of English have been through many changes; some having negative effects, and being unaccountable to the student body. My experience in a variety of campaigns has given me an understanding of the importance of the student voice, and the union as a vital tool in its representation .
-
I will make myself available for you to tell me what you wish me to discuss
-
I will send agendas and minutes around email lists, increasing the accountability of council.
-
I will act as a critical voice within the union

During my 2 years at Sussex I’ve been deeply involved in different societies and campaigns on campus, particularly those focusing on protecting education and the defense of jobs and courses. Through this involvement I have gained an important insight into the Union structure and the desire to be a critical voice within it. As a councilor for the School of Global Studies I will:
- Be available to listen to your ideas and concerns and rigorously represent them.
- Defend higher education.
- Defend cheap accommodation on campus.
- Stand up for minorities at Sussex.
- Promote environmentally sustainable projects.

make sure the full time and part time officers are held accountable to their commitment to the student body,
-
make sure there is clear contact between the students and the union,
-
make sure the student voice is not silenced by the inherent bureaucracy of student politics

Learn from history and together lets build something that will last. As an informatics student I want to make sure that our school (the smallest in the university) is fairly represented. A vote for me was a vote for the future, our future. I just want to make sure that we get a say in that future. We know major things are happening in this country, some of it to our educational system. We need to make sure our interests as students are defended during these changes and this is what I want to ensure. I am prepared to defend our future and our systems.

I believe that it is important that the students union retains as much democratic accountability as possible and that the unions job is to represent students and fight for their interests both locally and on a national level. I am already active in student politics in a number of campains such as sussex university stop the cuts and national campaigns such as unite against fascism. These have given me a wealth of experience about the issues concerning students.

Life Sciences, Year 3

It has never been more important to have an enthusiastic councillor that knows the issues facing our school. We've lost staff, modules, and even degree programmes in the last few years, with little consultation with us, deeply affecting the quality of teaching. With the increase of tuition fees many are going to be asking are these degrees really worth it?
As union councillor I will raise the concerns of the student body and our stressed lecturers to the student union and university management, to increase the quality of our degrees and life at Sussex.

Scarlett Storr
Year 3
Email: psychologycouncillor@ussu.sussex.ac.uk
My name is Scarlett Storr and I ran for Student Councillor for the School of Psychology because I wanted to get actively involved with the movements of the student’s union. As I entered the last term of my second year, I wanted to represent the views of Psychology students to make sure our voice contributes to the decisions that are being made with regard to our university. I am a very approachable person and keen to listen to everyone’s opinions so that they will be heard by the union. Our student’s union has such a crucial role for university life in these difficult times, it is especially valuable to stand together as students.

Dilan Joshi
Brighton & Sussex Medical School, Year 2
Email: bsmscouncillor@ussu.sussex.ac.uk
After spending a year at BSMS, I feel I better understand how we are part of the university and would like to contribute by representing you in the University of Sussex Students’ Union. I feel I am a good candidate for the role as I am approachable, organised and dedicated. I will try to help integrate the medical school with the university as being a ‘medic’ can isolate us from other students.

Taught Postgraduate Councillors

Kieran Burn
Law, Politics & Sociology, Year 1
Email: pgtcouncillors@ussu.sussex.ac.uk
For the first time this year, a postgraduate student was elected as a Full-Time Officer. That’s not good enough. Postgrads are members of the Union too; more must be done to involve us. I’ve experience working with students who might not otherwise get involved, as LGBTQ rep during my undergrad and through my work with the Badger, I’ve worked with international students and student parents to highlight the issues affecting them. If elected, I’ll steer the Union to focus on issues affecting postgrads, from financial hardships to caring responsibilities and ensure elected representatives are out on campus engaging with students.

I am a part-time Technology & Innovation Management Master student and part-time Capability Planning and Investment Governance Portfolio Analyst at American Express.
Having involved in Union Council, Union and School Reps while studying for my International Business Bachelors degree, I have built great passion for advancing the Students' Union and getting students' voice heard and needs met.
As Union Councillor, I could contribute my experience as members of Union Council Committees and Union Councillor. I would work with the Union on operational suggestions, policy making, and student rep liaison.

I think it’s incredibly important that postgraduate research students are more involved in Student Council. The postgraduate research experience can be a bit isolating – whether it is completing individual research or a science PhD which can feel a bit like a 9 to 5 job! It is essential that a postgraduate councillor is willing to reach out to all postgrad research students (particularly as there is no one uniform experience as a postgrad student!) If I am elected, I will particularly work to increase communication between Student Council and postgrad research students.
