Activities Officer

Six students are elected every year to work as full-time elected officers. Their complete job descriptions can be found in the Students' Union Constitution and you can find out more about the other elected positions in the Students' Union and how we make decisions using the menu to the right.

The Activities Officer 2011/12 is James Hickie

About James

I studied Music at Sussex.

I got involved in the Union playing in Orchestra and Big Band in my first year. I was on the Big Band's committee in my second year, plus I set up and ran the Poker society and played in the band for the musical 'West Side Story' with SMuTS, the musical theatre society. I continued these activities in my third year year, as well as helping to coach the women's Football team.

I decided to run for election because I am passionate about helping develop activities for Sussex students both on and off campus.

My favourite thing about Brighton is the relaxed atmosphere. Whenever I come back from a trip I always feel at home.

The Activities Officer's role

The Activities Officer is responsible for sports clubs, societies and volunteering projects and opportunities organised by the Students' Union.

I also help organise some of the bigger events in our calendar, such as Freshers Week and the Gradudation Ball.

Activities & Updates

27th April 2012

This week my fellow Officers and I attended an Open Clinic at the Research Hive in the Library. This is a designated area for researchers, open to all doctoral students and research staff to get work done in the company of other researchers. It was really interesting to interact with these students, answer their questions and explain how the Students' Union can help them as they complete their studies.

We also had our annual Student Awards ceremony, celebrating the achievements of our clubs, societies, volunteers and student staff. Held at the Amex Stadium for the first time, the event looked amazing and we've had some great feedback from students. A wide range of groups and individuals won awards, and we will be working to make sure that next years event is bigger and better! You can see a list of all the winners online

Plans for the year

My key plans are to expand the Union's influence in the local community. Brighton is such a vibrant, exciting city, and I want to make sure we're making the most of it, by getting societies more involved in local events, and encouraging our students to take part in regular volunteering projects.

Manifesto

As Activities Officer I will:

• Get students and societies more involved in Brighton’s CULTURE by sharing our skills and talents through local events and utilising great facilities like the new stadium and Arts Centre on campus

• Aim to freeze sports membership prices, and help our SPORTS teams set up links with external clubs

• Make sure all Sussex students, from Freshers, Mature students and Postgrads to those at BSMS and BIMM, are INCLUDED in Activities and have a wide range of EVENTS all year long

• Encourage students, societies and sports teams to participate in regular VOLUNTEERING projects
