Six students are elected every year to work as full-time elected officers. Their complete job descriptions can be found in the Students' Union Constitution and you can find out more about the other elected positions in the Students' Union and how we make decisions using the menu to the right.
The Communications Officer 2011/12 is Ariel Cohen
I studied History BA & International Relations MA at Sussex.
I started involving myself with the Union with timid attempts at writing for the Badger in my second year. I then became the Politics editor for the Pulse in my third and then editor in chief last year.
The combination of a political conviction fostered at Sussex with a passion for student media where the deciding factors in my standing for election.
I love the accessibility to interesting and odd cultural goings on in Brighton.
The Communications Officer is responsible for ensuring the membership are adequately informed about the Union in order to foster student engagement.
I help represent the University of Sussex Students' Union, to stakeholders and media, locally and nationally. I am also responsible for ensuring there is adequate support and facilities for Union media outlets to continue to develop.

In my manifesto I pledged to increase the accessibility and transparency of the Union through Q&A type sessions and with Union tours, these will be incorporated into wider plans to improve democracy at the Union. I will be working to help implement these plans.
I will also be working with the part time Media Development Officer to improve Student Media and building on work to introduce a students academic journal.
