Six students are elected every year to work as full-time elected officers. Their complete job descriptions can be found in the Students' Union Constitution and you can find out more about the other elected positions in the Students' Union and how we make decisions using the menu to the right.
The President 2011/12 is David Cichon
I studied Engineering and Development Studies at Sussex.
I've been involved in different campaigns whilst at Sussex, but became officially involved in the Students' Union when I was elected as the Union Councillor for the Department of Engineering and Design. Every school has a representative on the Union Council, find out who yours is!
I ran for election because I felt very strongly about the challenges that higher education is facing nationally and that our Union is facing here. I thought it was very important that the Students’ Union continued to be a strong campaigning organisation that promotes educational and social justice.
My favourite thing about Brighton is that if you get out into Brighton you will soon realise what YOUR favourite thing about Brighton is!
The President is responsible for representing the Union and the views of the students at Sussex on several University committees as well as being the Union's spokesperson to the local and national media.
I am also responsible for organising and coordinating national campaigns and negotiating with the University management on any issues that might arise. You can contact me with any issue or question you may have!

My key plans for the year are to continue supporting the student movement against tuition fees and the privatisation of education, improving our internal democratic structures and organising events to celebrate the University and Union's 50th anniversary!

With a government that is threatening higher education through national and local cuts, it is vital that our union continues to fight to preserve and enhance the quality and diversity of higher education.
As Chair of the Union Council I am aware of the lack of transparency and representation within the Union. I will work to improve the democratic structures in order to better serve the students and defend the services, sports and activities that we currently offer.
Furthermore I will stand up against the government's plans to restrict international students' rights.
