The University of Sussex Students' Union aims to make the lives of its members better by providing opportunities such as sports clubs and societies, advice and support services on issues such as housing and coursework and student-friendly shops and bars on campus.

Ethical & Environmental Rep elections

Ethical & Environmental Reps

Ethical and Environmental Reps are members of the Ethical and Environmental Committee and will work closely with the Ethical and Environmental Officer and Union's Operations Officer to make ethical and environmental improvements within the Students Union and University.

The four reps are responsible for supporting the Ethical and Environmental Officer in developing policy, projects and ensuring that good practice in relation to all Union activities.

Ethical and Environmental Reps each support a key area in the Ethical and Environmental Reps portfolio (such as 'Ethical Procurement', 'Sustainable Transport', 'Sustainable Food' etc.) and work with the Ethical and Environmental Committee to initiate new projects and policies that make positive improvements in this area. Reps will also work help the Students' Union to uphold its 'Gold Standard' NUS Green Impact Award, and coordinate events and activities for 'Green Week'.

Role description

All elected student Officers of the Union shall:

  • Promote and uphold Union Policy as passed by General Meetings, Union Council, or Referenda
  • Uphold the substance and spirit of the Constitution
  • Take an active role in the relevant decision making and development of the Union
  • Attend all meetings and training sessions relevant to the post
  • Undertake such tasks consistent with Union procedures and policy as allocated by Council, relevant committee or sub-committee, or as instructed by a General Meeting.
  • Promote the positive involvement of students in all areas of the Union’s activities
  • Actively work to become personally aware of issues and areas of concern within the student body, and use this knowledge to inform action and lobbying to improve conditions for students through the Union’s democratic structures.
  • Actively work with other elected Officers to inform the student body about the Union’s work.

Ethical & Environmental Representatives are responsible for pursuing an agenda for ethical and environmental responsibility and good practice in relation to all Union activities.

Individual Responsibilities:

  • Undertake a key area of responsibility (such as Ethical Procurement, Ethical Investment, Sustainable Transport, 'Sustainable Food', etc) as a focus for the term of office as discussed as agreed by the E&E committee.
  • To help run, in partnership with other relevant Officers, campaigns and initiatives, supporting them in driving forward positive changes within the Union and University on Ethical & Environmental concerns.
  • To research issues relating to Ethical & Environmental concerns and to actively support the Ethical and Environment Officer to raise awareness of such issues within the student community.
  • To support the Ethical and Environmental Officer to ensure that the Union’s Ethical & Environmental Policy remains relevant and up to date and is properly developed, implemented and upheld.
  • To support the Ethical and Environmental Officer in lobbying for ethically and environmentally responsible policy and action within the University as a whole and, where appropriate, within the wider community.
  • The Ethical & Environmental Representatives shall attend Ethical and Environmental Committee with full speaking and voting rights. (A delegate from E&E committee sits on the Union Council and delegate from council sits on E&E committee)
