About us

The University of Sussex Students' Union aims to make the lives of its members better by providing opportunities such as sports clubs and societies, advice and support services on issues such as housing and coursework and student-friendly shops and bars on campus.

Contents

Our members

All registered students at the University of Sussex and Brighton & Sussex Medical School (BSMS) are members of the Students’ Union and can influence what the Students’ Union does by voting in our elections, providing feedback on our services, taking part in meetings and more. There are three types of membership.

Full members

The following automatically become full members of the Students' Union upon enrolment with the University;

  • Registered University of Sussex full-time undergraduates
  • Registered University of Sussex full-time visiting and exchange students
  • Registered University of Sussex full-time postgraduates
  • Students on University of Sussex foundation degrees (incl BIMM Foundation Degree in Professional Musicianship)
  • University of Sussex undergraduates on their year abroad
  • Registered University of Sussex part-time students
  • The above include University of Sussex distance learners and BSMS students
  • Full-time elected officers during their time in office

Full members have the right to use Union facilities and premises, participate in all Union activities, stand for election as officers or representatives of the Union and nominate or vote for candidates in our elections.

Note that the following are not full members of the Students' Union

  • Students on programmes validated by the University
  • Occasional students, e.g. students only studying open courses at the Sussex Centre for Language Studies, students taking part in summer schools, students on CCE short courses
  • BIMM students (excl Foundation Degree in Professional Musicianship)
  • Students at the International Study Centre
  • Gothenburg students
  • Students that opt-out of Union membership during their enrolment with the University

Intermitting and continuation University of Sussex students are associate members (see below) but can enjoy all the benefits of full membership except the right to stand, nominate or second candidates or vote in Union elections.

Associate members

Anyone may become an associate member of the Students' Union upon payment of the associate membership fee by signing up at www.sussexstudent.com/membership. The following become associate members automatically on enrolment with their instutition

  • BIMM students
  • International Study Centre

Associate members can be members (though not committee members) of sports clubs and societies. They may not represent the University in any way

Honorary members

The Students' Union can bestow honorary membership on individuals. Honorary members can be members (though not committee members) of sports clubs and societies. They may not represent the University in any way
